Dangers of remaining in EU that includes Turkey

-

WHAT is most demeaning about the Remain campaign’s scaremongering is the constant warning that leaving the EU would be “a giant leap in the dark”. The Prime Minister speaks as if a vote for the status quo will be on the referendum ballot paper – “Why risk change when we can vote to keep things as they are?” Except he knows keeping things as they are isn’t an option.

If we stay in the EU it will change dramatically – becoming larger and even more undemocratic. Today Mr Cameron flies to Brussels to discuss how Turkey could be admitted to the EU. He is enthusiastic to embrace Turkey’s 77 million citizens because despite his promises to reduce immigration the PM seems intent on fuelling our economic recovery with cheap labour.

If the EU admits Turkey it will make the present flood of migrants look like a trickle and they’ll all have the legal power to settle where they choose.

They won’t be corralled into camps in France – they will have passports and they will have rights. And they will be over here.

In Turkey terrorists have killed hundreds and the government has seized control of the biggest newspaper, sparking riots. Yet the EU pays only lip service to Turkish abuses of human rights, pumps millions into the country and would like it to join the club.

If Britain votes to stay in the EU then that is the dark morass into which we will be taking a giant leap. Safer? Stronger? Better? The Prime Minister must stop treating us like naive fools.
