Stabbing rescuers praised

THE family of a heavily pregnant woman stabbed in broad daylight have praised the “fearless” passers- by who intervened.

The 40- year- old woman, who gave birth to a healthy baby following the incident in Sutton Coldfi eld, Birmingham, on Friday, is now in a stable condition.

Police said several people tried to help, two of whom were treated for minor injuries.

The victim was later taken by air ambulance to hospital.

Her family said yesterday: “We’d all like to express our heartfelt thanks to everybody who helped her.

“Your fearlessne­ss and selfl ess actions saved both their lives and we are overwhelmi­ngly grateful to you all.”

Babur Karamat Raja, 41, of Sutton Coldfi eld, was charged with attempted murder and attempted child destructio­n, assault and possession of a knife in a public place.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Birmingham magistrate­s’ court today.

Company records show he is a director of Haden Mercedes- Benz specialist­s in Birmingham.

He is believed to be married with at least one child.
