I can win easily, says a triumphant Trump

- By Cyril Dixon

A JUBILANT Donald Trump claimed yesterday that he could easily win the US presidential race after winning another three state primaries.

The billionaire businessman predicted a convincing victory for the Republicans if the party united behind him.

Mr Trump, 69, cemented his position as the clear front runner for the party’s White House nomination after the victories in Mississippi, Michigan and Hawaii.

Despite losing the primary in Idaho, in the latest batch of polls he now averages 40 per cent of the Republican vote.

He said: “If we could embrace this moment as a party, we’re going to win so easily.

“Something is happening that’s amazing. We’re getting millions and millions of people that have never voted before.”

He claimed to have won over “millions of Democrats and independents” on his colourful election trail.

Mr Trump added: “We’re going to win areas and states that were never in play before, and would never be in play for any of these other candidates.”

He claimed more than 47 per cent of the vote in Mississippi and 36 per cent in Michigan, beating Ted Cruz by more than 10 points in both.

In the Republican- only contests of Hawaii and Idaho, he won the first with 42 per cent but lost the second to Texas governor Mr Cruz’s 45 per cent.

For the Democrats, Bernie Sanders had a surprise victory in Michigan, but Hillary Clinton increased her overall lead with a massive 82 per cent vote share in Mississippi.

Primary wins guarantee the candidates the backing of party delegates for the final vote in July.

Mrs Clinton now has 1,162 delegates compared with Mr Sanders’ 571, while Mr Trump’s 458 easily outstrips the 359 claimed by nearest rival Mr Cruz.

The billionaire’s triple triumph sets the scene for a crucial contest on Tuesday when votes are held in Ohio, Florida, Illinois, Missouri and North Carolina.
