Harry tells of his ‘ guilt’ as he left Afghan battlefields

-

He said: “2017 is your chance to salute those who serve your country, who put themselves in harm’s way so you don’t have to.

“On home soil, during this most auspicious of years as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary and remembers the events and sacrifices at Vimy Ridge, you will have the chance to cheer on the custodians of the Invictus spirit.

“Your support will create a lifechanging atmosphere for competitors and spectators alike.”

The prince, a former Army officer, spoke of the decision to recall him from his first tour in Afghanistan in 2008 after his presence as a forward air controller leaked out. It played a huge part in his decision to create the games.

“I could no longer stay with my soldiers, as it would have put them at greater risk,” he explained. “It was a decision over which I had no control. But the guilt of having to leave my guys behind was something I had to swallow.”

He told how seeing three seriously wounded British troops in induced comas and the coffin of a Danish soldier on his plane home made him think about sacrifice.

Prince Harry said: “Four years later I made it back to Afghanistan as an Apache helicopter pilot.

“Again, I was reminded of the human impact of conflict as I protected medical teams evacuating soldiers from the battlefield.

“On other occasions I sat at the controls of one of the world’s most advanced helicopters and was powerless to protect men, women and children below. On returning home, I began to look for ways to support veterans with injuries.”

Seeing the Warrior Games for wounded troops in the US in 2013 gave him the idea to create a bigger, international version, using sport to show the indomitable spirit of the wounded warriors.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau threw support behind the prince, saying: “This is an opportunity to recognise the extraordinary service, strength and resilience of those who choose to serve their country.”

While in Toronto Prince Harry threw in the puck to launch a game of sledge hockey – a version of ice hockey for disabled people.
