Worthy fan will present trophy to players

- By David Pilditch

SUPERFAN Steve Worthy was overjoyed last night after being chosen to present his Leicester City heroes with their historic Premier League trophy.

The 39-year-old sales manager was selected to perform the presentation on behalf of his 97-year-old grandmother, Gladys Kenney.

She was Leicester’s oldest season ticketholder until she was forced to give up following the team this year because of ill health.

Mrs Kenney became a season ticket holder in her 80s, having gone to as many matches as she could when she worked in a shoe shop in the city.

Widowed 39 years ago, she has two children, five grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Steve was chosen by league sponsors Barclays to hand over the trophy to Foxes captain Wes Morgan after Saturday’s final home game against Everton because of her devotion to the club.

He found out moments after watching Leicester clinch the title when Spurs failed to beat Chelsea on Monday night.

City legend Muzzy Izzet knocked on his door and handed him the trophy.

Steve has not been able to sleep since.

He said: “I was already in shock having seen Leicester win the Premier League.

“When one of my heroes knocked on my door with the trophy I couldn’t quite believe it. When I hand it to Wes Morgan I’ll be thinking of my grandmother.

“She’s been a Leicester City fan since 1949 but has had to miss out on our most incredible season yet because she’s not well enough to attend games.

“For Barclays to give our family this amazing opportunity means so much.

“I’m hoping my grandmother will be able to join us at the King Power Stadium to experience the big moment.’’

Izzet, who made more than 260 appearances for Leicester, said: “Seeing the look on Steve’s face as he opened the door was brilliant.

“The love that he and Gladys have for the club is phenomenal and I can’t even begin to imagine how they will be feeling.’’
