Cults statute may penalise religions too

A LAW to protect vulnerable people from cults is probably long overdue but I simply do not trust our politician­s to make sure that it will be sensibly implemente­d. If such a law is put on the statute book then I fear that any street preacher, any evangelica­l church or any organisati­on such as the Plymouth Brethren will be caught in its net.

No government whether Labour or Conservati­ve has in recent years shown any will to protect Christian conscience and I don’t see any sign of that changing. Such a law will almost certainly prove just another nail in the coffin of religious freedom while the cults continue to flourish.
