First-time mum... at 72

- By Douglas Patient

AN Indian woman has become a mum... at the age of 72.

Thought to be one of the world’s oldest mothers, Daljinder Kaur is celebrating with her 79-year-old husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, after she gave birth to their first child through IVF treatment.

She has also decided to breastfeed her son Armaan, who was born naturally last month without complications.

Daljinder and her husband live in Amritsar in the state of Punjab. Despite being married for 46 years, the couple decided to seek fertility treatment only in September 2014. Ignoring warnings that Daljinder was too old, they paid a million rupees (£10,000) for the treatment.

The new mother said: “We cannot thank God and our doctor enough for blessing us with a baby. At the IVF Centre in 2014 I met a lady doctor who refused point blank, stating I was too old to become a mum.

“I was crushed, but I am an optimist at heart and wanted to at least give it a chance. I insisted and pestered the doctor at the clinic to give my case a chance.”

Father Mohinder added: “We are very happy that we have been blessed with a son as we had been trying for a baby since we got married.”
