“I can understand why people look at me as an opener,” said Compton. “I also know that what you’ve seen in an England shirt doesn’t necessaril­y equate to how I am at my best.”

In a 2-1 series win in South Africa this winter, Compton scored 245 runs but at a strike rate of just 37.80. His 85 at Durban took more than six hours.

However Compton, 32, admitted he does not care what labels other people might put on him, as long as he has the Three Lions on his shirt.

“I’d bat at 11 for England if that’s what they wanted,” he added.
