Call-up will cap it all for Carter

-

DANIELLE CARTER hopes her Wembley heroics have sent a message to England manager Mark Sampson.

Carter scored the only goal to win the Women’s FA Cup for Arsenal for a record 14th time.

Sampson was among the 32,912 in the stands at Wembley – a record for a Women’s FA Cup match – and now has to decide whether the winger, 22, is worth another look.

Carter scored a hat-trick on her Lionesses debut in the 8-0 win over Estonia in September last year but has not featured in the six games since.

“I’d say I’m coming into form now,” she said. “There’s a lot more to come from me but if I keep going how I’m going hopefully there’s a lot more to see from Dan Carter.

“I’d love to be a regular for England but my first job is to get back in there and get knocking on the door.

“If I keep playing and doing what I’m doing, then hopefully I’ll get a call-up again.”

Carter’s goal stunned holders – and last year’s Double winners – Chelsea, who never really got going. And she hopes it can help put Arsenal back on track in the league.

Arsenal have had an inconsistent start to the season and sit third in the Women’s Super League, eight points back from Manchester City and five behind Chelsea.

“Hopefully we can take this game’s momentum into the rest of the season,” said Carter. “We won the FA Cup two years ago and the Continental Cup last year, but we are lacking the league. Again it’s going to take time. I hope for the rise of Arsenal Ladies.”

The Blues had chances to equalise as Fran Kirby, Ji So-Yun and Drew Spence wasted opportunities following the opener. But Chelsea lacked the spark their attacking don’t think we performed to what we could have done.”

Chelsea play Manchester City on Thursday in a top-of-the-table clash, with both boasting 100 per cent records so far, and Chapman is backing her side to get it right.

“We’ll turn it around,” she said. “We’ll get together and talk about it when we get to training in the week and we’ll be more than ready come Thursday.”
