Hold tight! Rush-hour bus driver told he had won £6m on lottery
BUS driver Kevin Jones had a battle to stay calm on his rush-hour run after discovering he had won £6million on the lottery.
The stunned grandfather got a phone call from his wife confirming the jackpot win just as he finished the first leg of his morning route.
Kevin, 57, who had been working 12-hour days after losing everything in a double burglary, said: “It was just so much to take in.
“I tried to remain calm. I knew I had to drive the bus back and look after all of my passengers.”
Kevin immediately phoned his depot to say “something major had happened” which may affect his concentration. He returned steadily to Crewe from Newcastle-underLyme, Staffs, and his boss at D&G bus company agreed it was best for Kevin to take the rest of the day off for the safety of his passengers.
The father-of-two had checked his numbers online the night before but would not accept he had won the £6,162,138 pot until his wife Michele confirmed it with Lotto organisers Camelot.
Kevin said: “There was no way I couldn’t go into work – I know how much people rely on me for their morning commute.
“I went to work as planned, asking Michele to call Camelot to see if what I thought had happened really was reality.”
It was – and the win was especially sweet after the pain inflicted on the couple by thieves.
Kevin explained: “Several years ago we were living in Spain and suffered two break-ins over one weekend and lost everything.
“Michele was so frightened we drove back to England straight away and had to start all over again. To think we had nothing and were working around the clock and now we have this, the life of our dreams.”
Kevin’s May 18 win came with the balls 1, 3, 28, 34, 37 and 46. His days on the buses are numbered too – he will retire once he serves his notice.
