Messi quits and misses

-

LIONEL MESSI has retired from international football after missing a penalty in Argentina’s shoot-out loss to Chile in the Copa America final – and some of his team-mates may now follow him.

The Barcelona forward, below, decided to quit without winning a major trophy for his country.

Messi, 29, announced his decision after failing in his fourth final. His last act was to fire a penalty over the bar.

“It’s best for everyone, for me and for many people who want it,” he said.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, who scored in the shoot-out, hinted he and some of his team-mates would also consider their futures.

Aguero said: “Messi is probably not the only one that will leave the national team. There are several players like me who are evaluating whether or not to continue.” LAURENT BLANC has left his position as coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

The former France captain spent three years in charge at PSG but could never guide them past the Champions League quarter-finals.

Blanc signed a two-year contract extension in February, but not even a third straight Ligue 1 title was enough to keep him in the job.
