Wonder Willis lands tilt at Fed
WIMBLEDON outsider Marcus Willis landed a fairy-tale meeting with Roger Federer tomorrow after the biggest win of his career.
Qualifier Willis, world ranked 772 and whose season’s earnings had totalled £213 from a Tunisian Futures Tour event, is guaranteed a £50,000 payday after beating Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 yesterday.
“It’s an amazing dream come true,” said Willis. “I get to play on a stadium court and I’m going to try to win. He’s a little bit better than me – but I’ll give it everything. I’m not sure he can play on grass!”
Willis, 25, supplements his income by giving tennis lessons at Warwick Boat Club and still lives with his parents in Wokingham.
“I’ve never even spoken to Federer. I don’t think he was at Tunisia this year!” said Willis, whose dentist girlfriend Jennifer Bate was able to share his glory after fate leant a hand.
“I went in this morning ready to see my patients. But the suction machine was not working so my boss said cancel all your appointments,” she said.
There was one other notable British success yesterday, with Dan Evans beating German Jan-Lennard Struff. June 30, 8pm, Marseilles July 1, 8pm, Lille July 2, 8pm, Bordeaux July 3, 8pm, Paris
