AT 7FT, IS THIS THE GREATEST DANE EVER?

- By Douglas Patient

MEET Major, the Great Dane in the running to be crowned the world’s tallest dog.

The three-year-old measures 41in from his paw to his shoulder. And when he stands on his hind legs he reaches 85in... just over 7ft.

Enormous he may be, but the best thing about him is his good nature, say owners Brian and Julie Williams of Penmaen, near Swansea, South Wales.

Fantastic

Brian, 55, said: “He is the biggest-hearted dog in the world. He is such a fantastic animal. People love seeing him.

“We bought him as a pup and he has been with us ever since.

“He’s afraid of his own shadow, he’s absolutely great with kids and an absolute star.”

The family, who spend up to £35 a week feeding Major, run a falconry centre in their grounds.

He said: “We have lots of animals here, hawks, falcons, horses, sheep and goats, but Major is top dog. He has got free rein of the place, he isn’t locked indoors.

“The biggest thing about him is his character. He is outgoing and there is not an aggressive bone in his body.”

Brian and Julie are waiting for confirmation that Major is the world’s tallest dog from Guinness World Records.

Its officials are measuring up Major and two other contenders, Freddy from Southend in Essex, and Rocco from Nevada in the US.

The previous world’s official largest dog, Great Dane “Giant” George, who measured 43in from paw to shoulder, died at home in Arizona three years ago.

Should he be pronounced the world’s tallest dog, Major is unlikely to become overexcited.

When not scoffing on his daily diet of eggs, beef, biscuits and three and half pints of milk, he sleeps for 22 hours in 24.

MAJOR, a three-year-old Great Dane, stands 7ft 1in tall and is a whisker away from being named the world’s tallest dog in the Guinness World Records. He is much loved by owners Brian and Julie Williams who say the “biggest thing about him is his character”. His paws are pretty enormous too.
