Man is hacked to death in ‘Jungle’ turf war

- By Giles Sheldrick

A MIGRANT was hacked to death in the notorious Calais “Jungle” camp in the latest bloody turf war between groups trying to get to the UK.

Another six people were badly wounded as knife-wielding gangs fought in the giant shanty town.

Last night the dead man was described by French authorities as a 37-year-old Ethiopian who wanted to claim asylum in Britain.

A source at the prefecture covering Calais said: “Two fights broke out close to the camp between African migrants and Afghans. Knives and batons were being used, causing one death and leaving six other Ethiopians seriously hurt.”

Police have launched a murder hunt. The 200 suspects directly involved in the fighting are believed to be from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Afghanistan.

The ramshackle camp in the shadow of the ferry terminal has become a waiting room for economic migrants desperate to sneak across the Channel. It is now home to an estimated 7,000 refugees who regularly try to storm lorries running a gauntlet towards the port.

Violence often erupts on the motorway and approach roads as rival groups jostle for prime positions.

The latest bloodshed comes after aid workers warned the tent city was a “pressure cooker about to blow” as French authorities prepare to bulldoze another swathe of the fetid settlement. Charity groups fear the refugee camp will be torn down, leaving the migrants with nowhere to stay.

Natacha Bouchart, the Mayor of Calais, has repeatedly called for the Jungle to be completely bulldozed, as it is the only way to eliminate the eyesore.

Earlier this year, demolition teams flanked by riot squads dismantled the southern section of the camp.

The operation saw tear gas and baton charges used against gangs of hooded men who had congregated in the area.
