Higuain joins Juve for £75m

- PETER EDWARDS

GONZALO HIGUAIN has become the third-most expensive signing in football history after joining Juventus from Napoli.

Juve have triggered the 28-year-old Argentina striker’s release clause of £75.3 million, placing him behind only Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo on the all-time list. Higuain scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A games last season as Napoli finished second, nine points behind Juve.

Having moved to Real Madrid from River Plate, Higuain scored 107 goals in six and a half seasons and helped the club to win three league titles and the 2011 Copa del Rey. He moved to Napoli in 2013 and won the 2014 Coppa Italia.

Paul Pogba’s move from Juventus to Manchester United, for what would be a world record £100m, stalled yesterday.

His medical was cancelled when, according to reports in Spain, his agent, Mino Raiola, refused to go further until his own payment for brokering the deal is sorted out.

He wants £25m but Juventus are allegedly refusing, so United may have to pay the fee. ARSENAL have had a £29million offer for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette rejected by the French club.

Lyon also deny the Gunners have tabled a new bid of £40.2m for the 25-year-old Frenchman, right.

“Arsenal made an offer which Lyon didn’t accept for one reason – we will keep Lacazette,” said a club statement.
