Lesley’s fit to win Strictly at 70
ACTRESS Lesley Joseph will become the oldest female contestant on Strictly Come Dancing when the new series kicks off next month.
The Birds Of A Feather star, 70, last night signed up for the hit show, saying she was in peak condition.
Mother-of-two Lesley, who plays man-eater Dorien Green in the long-running sitcom, said: “I’ve been doing yoga for a few years now. I usually do four classes a week so hopefully all the stretching will help a bit.
“I’ve always been a fan of Strictly. It’s very exciting and yet nerve racking at the same time. I can’t wait to be involved in such a celebratory and fun show... it’s exactly what the nation needs in times like these.”
Lesley will be the third oldest celebrity after presenter Johnny Ball, 74, and the late Paul Daniels, who was 72 when he danced.
Former shadow chancellor Ed Balls, 49, joked that his participation in the ballroom competition was a “midlife crisis”.
Balls, who is married to Labour MP Yvette Cooper, said: “I’d like to say I’m just really excited about learning to dance on TV, but the truth is I’m also scared to death.
“I’ve taken the view that if you have a midlife crisis, make sure you plan it well and enjoy every minute.”
Lesley and Ed are joined by Will Young, Laura Whitmore, Ore Oduba, Melvin Odoom, Louise Redknapp, Danny Mac, Daisy Lowe, Naga Munchetty, Anastacia, Claudia Fragapane, Greg Rutherford, Tameka Empson and Robert “Judge” Rinder for the 14th series.
It will be head judge Len Goodman’s last series after he said age had finally caught up with him.
East Ender Len, 72, has been a mainstay of the BBC One show since it first hit screens in 2004. Professional dancer Anton Du Beke is the favourite to take his place.
Strictly returns on September 3.
