French ‘must destroy Jungle’ Interstate heading
FRANCE must agree to a new deal to dismantle the migrant Jungle camp in Calais and crack down on cross-Channel peopletrafficking.
Dover and Deal Conservative MP Charlie Elphicke has sent a report to Home Secretary Amber Rudd urging her to seek a new treaty with France to tackle the problems caused by the squalid settlement.
He complained that French police make the situation worse by releasing any people traffickers or smuggled migrants so they are free to attempt repeat illegal and hazardous crossings to the UK.
He also wants lorries fitted with anti-trafficking security devices to stop people sneaking on to the trucks.
He stressed tough action was in the interests of both Britain and France, whose border security and international trade are compromised by the camp and similar settlements attracting migrants.
Mr Elphicke said the UK needed a new treaty with France to make sure people traffickers go to jail or are deported.
He added: “The Calais Jungle is a magnet for traffickers who exploit the most vulnerable.”
He said French police were also deeply concerned that it was attracting terrorists.
Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill said the Government had spent tens of millions of pounds to boost security and would not hesitate to take further action to protect drivers.
