Three die in waves

- By Michael Knowles

THREE men died after being pulled from the sea yesterday, the hottest day of the year.

People on the packed beach in Camber Sands, East Sussex looked on in horror as two rescue helicopters flew in just after 2pm to help swimmers in difficulty.

Crying

Bathers were urged to stay out of the water as CPR was administered on the beach.

Natalja Taylor, 30, on a daytrip with her husband, said police drove up the beach with a loudhailer urging people to stay out of the sea.

She said: “We were sat on a hill a bit further away and we saw three people being pulled out of the water. I think the people who rescued them were regular people, not emergency personnel.” A 19-year-old student from south-east London, said: “While the people were doing CPR on the first two, another person had to be pulled out of the sea.

“There was so much crying, it was terrible.”

Sussex Police said: “The three men, who have not yet been identified, sadly died despite efforts to save them.”

Chief Superintendent Di Roskilly said: “This has been an incredibly tragic situation and very traumatic for those who were there.”

It is the second recent fatality at Camber Sands. Just last month Brazilian Gustavo Silva Da Cruz, 19, died swimming in the sea there.
