CHAD BARRETT scored 114 not out on his County Championship debut against Worcestershire yesterday to set a new record for the highest score by a Northamptonshire No10.

South African Barrett, below, and Steven Crook – with a career-best 145 – put on 145 for the ninth wicket before Northants were all out for 551 at New Road.

Worcester also found runs easy to come by, reaching 153-1 in response.

“Two years waiting to play a second first-class game [the first was against Sri Lanka] is a long time,” said Barrett.

“You think to yourself, ‘Am I going to play another one?’

“When I got the nod, I thought when I have a bat or a bowl, I have just got to show what I can do.”

Division One title-chasers Yorkshire flexed their muscles on day two against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough.

Bottom club Notts resumed on 38-2 in reply to 282 but were blown away for 94 before lunch. Jack Brooks, Tim Bresnan and Ryan Sidebottom, against his old club, each finished with three wickets. Skipper Gary Ballance declined to enforce the follow-on and top-scored with 75 not out as Yorkshire reached 200-4 – a lead of 388.

Warwickshire built the beginnings of a promising lead against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

Ian Westwood’s 127 helped the Bears reach 315-7 for an overnight lead of 108.
