Sunshine ... and showers, it’s going to be a typical Bank Holiday!
BRITAIN faces a real mixed bag of Bank Holiday weather with the heat giving way to a washout for many.
Last night a Met Office spokesman warned: “It’s a bit of everything for this weekend.”
The contrast began yesterday with music fans facing a sea of mud after rain hit the Leeds Festival while the beaches were packed in sweltering Brighton.
Today thundery showers will start in the South before they spread north across central UK.
The Met Office is warning of disruption to transport and outdoor events as the rain turns heavy and lingers over central parts of England and Wales.
A yellow warning persists into Sunday morning, when the thundery showers are expected to slowly clear to the East.
A Met Office spokesman said: “On Saturday we have a weather warning for heavy rain, from the South-west through to Wales and eastern areas. On Sunday morning more heavy rain is expected but it will clear off into the North Sea leaving a scattering of showers across most of the UK and some sunny spells.”
Temperatures will remain muggy today with highs of up to 80F (27C) in the South and mid 60Fs in the North.
Bright
On Sunday it will be a few degrees cooler with highs of around 75F in the South. Monday is looking a little better with bright sunny spells forecast.
The mixed weather came as the Bank Holiday getaway began last night with millions of people taking trips within the UK and abroad.
An estimated 16 million drivers are expected have take to the road for a holiday or an outing by Monday. Transport information supplier Inrix said some stretches of road could have twice as many vehicles compared with a normal weekend.
Hotspots for jams are expected to be the M25, M6, M4 and M27.
Travel organisation Abta estimated two million Britons will have headed abroad by Monday.
Airports will be busy, with Heathrow expecting more than 440,000 passengers to depart over the long weekend.
Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “This weekend is the traditional curtain closer for the peak summer months and it is always a very busy weekend for travel, with millions taking advantage of the long weekend to head off overseas. With the roads predicted to be extremely busy, holidaymakers should make sure that they leave plenty of time to get to their port of departure.”
