DO OLDER PEOPLE MAKE THE BEST DRIVERS?

THERE’S a reason why insurance premiums are in four figures for teenagers and less than £200 a year for people of a certain age (“Why older drivers are safer on roads”, September 8).

The last speeding ticket I had was in 1983 and even then I was only slightly over the limit. I have never had an accident because I am a very careful driver.

Unlike many teenagers I don’t fiddle with my smartphone when I’m driving and would never dream of getting behind the wheel if I’ve had a drink, which can’t be said for all younger drivers. Elizabeth Tyson, Southampto­n

TO quote the comedian Jasper Carrott, old people may not have many traffic accidents but they’ve seen thousands.

If I had a pound for every Sunday driver with a bus pass I’ve been stuck behind doing 30mph in a 50 zone then I’d be a lot richer than I am today.

Confused old pensioners are the biggest menace on our roads. They cause accidents by not keeping up with the flow of traffic, never indicating before suddenly lurching to one side and hogging the middle lane on motorways like it’s their own personal possession. Gary Burton,
