Hopes of finding Wembley way

-

iconic Wembley is, but that’s what we’ve got to be careful of. Monaco are going to come here and it’s a big occasion for them as well.

“We’re not here just to participate. We want to go as far as we can. We feel we have a group that we can definitely qualify from and a good start is important.”

Stoke made quite a promising start but seemed to fall apart when manager Mark Hughes was sent to the stands for losing his cool on the sidelines.

He gave referees’ assistant Peter Kirkup an ear-bashing after a bizarre incident should have prevented by Anthony Taylor.

Stoke should have had a foul when Dele Alli clattered into Jon Walters, but play went on and Marko Arnautovic flung himself into the air to avoid a high boot and was booked for diving.

Hughes, right, went ballistic and left the field in the 36th minute fistpumping the air to rev up his fans while clearly telling the Spurs end to keep quiet.

The excellent Son Heung-Min broke the deadlock just before the break and added another which been referee stunner in the 56th minute with an angled drive. Alli side-footed home a third to clinch it and Kane was gifted a chance unmarked two yards out to make him the fastest Spurs player to reach 50 career goals in the top flight.

It was a nightmare ending for Hughes’ men, who sit rooted at the bottom of the table with big question marks hanging over them.

Goalkeeper Shay Given said: “Sometimes we do feel unfairly treated but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to go out and prove to people that we are a good team and we’ve not done that this season yet. “We can make excuses and blame officials and everybody but we’ve got to look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we have done well enough individually and then collectively as the team and the answer would probably be no. There is a bit of a feeling that we’re not getting much help from officials, but we can’t look to that as an excuse.

“It gets harder when you haven’t got a win on the board.”
