Kos hunt for Ben is wound up

- By Sarah Westcott

THE disappearance of toddler Ben Needham remained a mystery last night after police ended their search for him on the Greek island of Kos.

Ben, from Sheffield, was just 21 months old when he vanished from a farmhouse in Iraklis during a family trip on July 24, 1991.

South Yorkshire Police officers and forensic experts have spent the last 21 days searching the site.

More than 800 tonnes of soil was dug up with items sent back to the UK for forensic analysis.

The search began after it emerged Ben may have been accidentally killed by digger driver Konstantinos Barkas, who was excavating land nearby. He died in 2015.

A police update on the search will be held today.

Detective Inspector John Cousins said: “I’m confident we have done what we can, given the plans we had before we came out here, so I can give an answer, whatever that is, to Ben’s family.”
