Refugees ‘brawling’ at resort

- From Alan Hall in Berlin

THE mayor of a ski resort warned of an “explosive situation” at a refugee centre and said it may have to close.

In a letter to leaders in Bavaria, Dr Sigrid Meierhofer said she was concerned about “public order and security” at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen centre.

Nearly half of the centre’s 250 residents are young African men.

“There has been an increasingly worsening situation in recent weeks around the registration centre,” she said in the letter. Deputy police chief Thomas Holzer said: “There are brawls, fights and property damage. In September we recorded a quarter of our annual operations.”

Without help, the centre would have to shut, the Social Democrat mayor said in the leaked letter to the government of Upper Bavaria. She said complaints were from residents, not far-Right groups.
