JOSE MOURINHO claims Wayne Rooney cannot be “hurt” any further by the criticism he has received for his performanc­es for club and country.

And the Manchester United boss hit back at suggestion­s from club legend Ryan Giggs that Rooney has been left “confused” about his position.

Rooney was stung when he was booed by fans during England’s 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley before interim boss Gareth Southgate dropped him to the bench for the trip to Slovenia.

It followed three games as a substitute for his club after calls from some United fans for him to be left out of the starting line-up.
