I am just the lady from Bake Off to pupils, says favourite Candice

- By Giles Sheldrick

CANDICE Brown might be the hot favourite to win Great British Bake Off, but to her toughest critics she is still plain “Miss”.

The 31-year-old PE teacher’s trademark pout makes her one of the most recognisable faces on TV.

And a good showing in the kitchen tomorrow will put her within touching distance of being crowned the best amateur baker.

But eight weeks of serving up perfect pies, pastries and desserts cuts no ice in the classroom .

Candice, from Bedford, said: “I work in a secondary school and teenagers have no sympathy for tired teachers who are secret bakers. My life hasn’t changed – although I am now Miss Brown or lady from Bake Off.”

Candice grew up in north London, where her parents’ ran pubs. She now lives with her boyfriend Liam and their pug dog Dennis.

In an interview for the latest issue of Radio Times, she said the inspiration behind her cooking came from her grandmother.

She said: “I love baking but never thought I’d get on Bake Off.

“My nan was the best. Her baking was amazing. I stood next to her watching in adoration. I dread to think how many hours, eggs, grams of sugar, flour and tears I’ve used up practising.

“I’d love to be able to bake all the time, but who knows?”

Candice has not had things all her own way in the hit BBC One competition.

A nightmare start saw her get so upset by a soggy sponge she flung it out of the tent window. But the following week she was star baker.

Tomorrow features the show’s Patisserie Week and Candice will be up against Jane Beedle, Andrew Smyth and Selasi Gbormittah.

The Great British Bake Off semifinal is on BBC One at 8pm.
