The seven MPs who are now facing a really rough ride

- By David Maddox

SEVEN of the 89 MPs who voted against Brexit in the House of Commons on Wednesday must now face the fury of their constituents who voted to Leave the EU.

The Government won a huge mandate with a majority of 372 as 461 MPs backed enacting “the wishes of the British people”.

However, of the 89 who opposed implementing the decision made in the biggest democratic exercise in British history, seven came from Leave supporting constituencies.

Ukip Brexit spokesman Gerard Batten said: “These MPs have just written their own political epitaph.

“They have just invited Ukip candidates to remove them at the earliest opportunity.”

Among them was Labour veteran Graham Allen, whose Nottingham North constituency voted 63.8 per cent to Leave.

Fellow Labour MP Angela Smith’s Penistone and Stocksbridge seat voted 61.3 per cent to Leave while Paul Farrelly’s Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency voted 61.7 per cent to Leave.

Other Labour MPs who ignored voters were Barry Sheerman, MP for Huddersfield, which saw a 51.1 per cent Leave vote, and Chris Evans, Islwyn, which returned a 58.9 per cent vote for Leave.

Welsh Nationalist Jonathan Edwards also ignored a 53.8 per cent Leave vote in his Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency.

And SNP MP Eilidh Whiteford snubbed the beleaguered fishing industry in her Banff and Buchan constituency where 54 per cent of voters backed Leave.

Scottish Tory MSP Ross Thomson, one of the few Scottish parliamentarians to campaign for Brexit, has accused her of failing to represent the views of her constituents.

Fishermen from Peterhead in Ms Whiteford’s seat won praise in the campaign with a flotilla down the Thames with Nigel Farage to highlight why Britain needs to be free of a Brussels which has almost destroyed their industry.

And last night the hardline EU Scottish nationalist faced a challenge in her own constituency.

Scottish Tory North East of Scotland MSP Ross Thomson, who backed Leave, said: “Eilidh Whiteford has to explain to those constituents why she is actively trying to block the Brexit process.

“Whether she voted for Remain or Leave it matters not. Her constituency wanted out of the EU and she needs to recognise that.”
