Now 1 in 10 homes don’t have a book
ONE in 10 British homes does not contain a single book, according to research.
The figure rises to one in five among households occupied solely by those aged 18 to 24.
Many read only online, with e-readers or a smartphone.
But books are not the only traditional household possessions that are giving way to technology, said the report by insurer Aviva after a survey of nearly 1,800 British adults.
On-screen solitaire and online gambling have led to an increase in the number of homes without a pack of playing cards or a set of dominoes.
But UK households now have an average of 8.2 internet-enabled devices – from laptops and tablets to smart TVs, smartphones and games consoles.
Other devices include security cameras, remotely operated thermostats and other items that fall under the category of “the internet of things”.
