AN ESTATE agent almost caused a housing boom after a “to let” sign put up in a garden cracked a gas main.

Residents reported a smell of gas just hours after Edison Ford estate agents installed the board in Yate, near Bristol.

A row of five terraced houses were cordoned off while firefighters dug up the lawn so engineers could reach the leak.

Fifteen people were allowed back into their homes about an hour after the evacuation at 6.50pm on Saturday.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service helped dig up land around the pipe for it to be repaired

Steve Clowes, property manager at Edison Ford, apologised, adding: “There have been many signs erected in lots of gardens by us and other agents over the years.

“We have yet to establish what was different about the garden of this house.”
