Could my eye drops
QSINCE being prescribed Latanoprost eye drop solution for primary open-angle glaucoma, I am experiencing chronic joint and muscle pain. Is it possible the medication is causing this as I had no such problem before?
AIN glaucoma, raised pressure inside the eyeball can lead to damage to the light-sensitive cells in the retina at the back of the eye. Latanoprost eye drops (also sometimes labelled as Xalatan) work by increasing the drainage of fluid from inside the eye, so reducing the pressure.
Although they can cause side-effects such as redness in and around the eye and darker skin around the eye, only a minuscule amount of the drug reaches the bloodstream and this means that more general side-effects are extremely rare.
I think it unlikely that your eye drops are causing your joint and muscle pain and it is probably just coincidence that these symptoms started at the same time as your eye problem.
See your GP, who can help sort out and treat the underlying cause – and keep using the eye drops!
