Bernie is out in F1 shake-up

- Nick Stamford

BERNIE ECCLESTONE’S 40-year reign as Formula One’s supremo is over after the 86-year-old confirmed last night he has been ousted after new owners Liberty Media completed a £6.4 billion takeover deal.

His role as chief executive of F1 will be taken by Chase Carey, the former president of 21st Century Fox, who was made chairman of the sport by Liberty last year.

Ecclestone, right, said: “I’m proud of the business that I built over the last 40 years and all I have achieved with F1.” He will now have the role of chairman emeritus, while former Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes chief Ross Brawn is set to return to F1 as part of the shake-up.

Carey said: “I would like to thank Bernie. The sport is what it is today because of him and his talented team of executives, and he will always be part of the F1 family. I am grateful for his continued insight and guidance.”
