Lescott adds fuel to the ire

-

JOLEON LESCOTT faces a fight to win over sceptical Sunderland fans after signing a short-term deal.

The 34-year-old centre-half, below, joins the Premier League’s bottom club two months after leaving AEK Athens, where he played just four games before hurting a knee and falling out with the Greek side.

While his arrival plugs a gap, with Papy Djilobodji facing a four-match ban, fans expressed their dismay at another free agent coming in – Lescott follows ex-Everton pals Steven Pienaar and Victor Anichebe, who were without a club. Yet Anichebe and Pienaar have done well for former Toffees boss David Moyes and signing Lescott until the end of the season makes sense, with Lamine Kone on African Nations Cup duty. Moyes will also have to cope without Anichebe for around 10 weeks following his knee injury on Saturday. Anichebe suffered medial ligament damage after coming on as a substitute in the defeat at West Brom. FABIAN DELPH says he is determined to fight for his future at Manchester City despite admitting he has become the club’s “forgotten man”. The former England midfielder, left, has started just eight league games in 18 months since his £8million move from Aston Villa after a series of groin injuries. But he may start for only the second time this season in Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Crystal Palace.

FULHAM and QPR have been charged with two counts of failing to control their players after Saturday’s stormy derby at Loftus Road. QPR coach Marc Bircham and Fulham’s medical chief Marco Cesarini have also been charged with improper conduct.
