Oh boy, what a surprise as Emily, 21, gives birth

- By Anil Dawar

CARE worker Emily Wackett thought she had put on a bit of weight over Christmas... then she went into labour.

Emily, 21, had no idea she was pregnant when she started having stomach pains while on a night shift.

She called her mother Lea and sister Vicky who rushed to help her at the Nightingale Care Home in Welborne near Dereham, Norfolk.

They dialled 999 and a paramedic confirmed Emily was in labour and having contractions, even though she had suffered no morning sickness or shown any baby bump during pregnancy.

Her baby boy, weighing just under 7lb, was born in the back of the ambulance five miles from hospital.

Emily who lives with her family in Dereham had been in labour for just over an hour when her son arrived at 3.18am on January 31. She said: “I felt a lot of pain but didn’t know what was wrong. I know someone who had appendix problems so I thought maybe that was it.”

Sister Vicky, 29, who is 11 weeks pregnant herself, said: “Mum couldn’t breathe in the panic and had to be treated at the hospital herself.”

Lea, 60, said: “We were told the baby may have been kicking the placenta which is why she didn’t feel anything.”

Emily’s boyfriend Matthew Charles, 20, a student at Middlesex University, was in bed when the drama began.

The baby was born while he was on a £170 taxi journey to the hospital.

Emily added: “Everything hasn’t sunk in yet, but we’re really happy.”
