A LITTLE girl suffered savage injuries after being “shaken like a rag doll” by a dog in a park playground.

The girl, believed to be about 18 months old, was mauled as the pit bull-cross dog clamped its jaws around her head.

Other brave children risked being bitten as they tried to drag the dog from the child, named locally as Victoria Resetnjova. It eventually released her and an older girl cradled the blood-soaked toddler.

Neighbours dashed outside with towels to stem the blood flow as the girl’s mother ran up screaming.

The dog was described as “weirdly calm” after the attack in Chatham, Kent, on Tuesday. A girl tied it to railings, where police shot it dead.

Witness Katy Ayres, 31, said the toddler was “covered in blood and so was the dog”. She said: “The dog had her in his mouth and was shaking her around. My mum went to help and she Katy Ayres’ son Charlie was attacked day before called the ambulance.” She said a day earlier the dog “went for” her son Charlie, three, who suffered bruising. The girl was airlifted to a London hospital in a critical condition. Yesterday police said she was being treated for “very serious injuries” but they were “no longer described as life threatening”. Hairdresser Alisha Robinson, 19, said: “The dog had picked her up and was shaking her by the head like a rag doll. I couldn’t see her face at all because she was covered in so much blood. The dog had blood all over its face, head and back.” Charlie Helder saw the tied-up dog shot dead. “There were two police officers with guns,” he said. “One said, ‘Stand back!’ and he shot it twice.” A man, a woman and a teenager were detained under the Dangerous Dogs Act. Police are still trying to establish the dog’s precise breed, a spokesman said.
