Turkish hooligans in violent clashes

LYON’S Europa League quarter-final first leg tie against Besiktas was delayed for 45 minutes after violence erupted between rival fans in shocking scenes before kick-off.

Hundreds of home supporters were forced to seek refuge on the pitch after being attacked by blackshirted Besiktas Ultras.

Turkish hooligans in the section above Lyon supporters threw fireworks and pelted them with missiles before wading into them.

Earlier Besiktas fans had running battles with police and Lyon fans before the game.

But Turkish fans were also attacked in the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium. Armed with weapons, they broke into the away section, which

included women and children and Lyon president Jean-Michael Aulas went on to the pitch to plead for calm.

The trouble came as UEFA stepped up security following the terrorism attack in Germany before Tuesday’s Champions League tie between Borussia Dortmund and Monaco.

In the other quarterfinals, Davy Klaassen scored twice to give Ajax a 2-0 victory over Schalke in Amsterdam.

Celta Vigo beat Genk 3-2 in a thriller in Spain.

Jean-Paul Boetius put the Belgians ahead but the home side hit back with strikes from Pione Sisto, Iago Aspas and John Guidetti before the break only for Thomas Buffel to score a second for Genk. PEP GUARDIOLA insists that Vincent Kompany has a role to play at Manchester City next season.

The injury-plagued defender completed his first full league game of the season at Chelsea last week but then sat out the weekend victory over Hull. Asked if Kompany, right, would still be in his plans next season, City boss Guardiola said: “Yes, he has a contract.

“He can hopefully play two games a week in the next period, in the future. But after the game against Chelsea he had problems with the leg and we didn’t want to take a risk. “But of course the good news was he could play 90 minutes, a tough game at Stamford Bridge and he played at a high, high level. What we have seen these two or three days is he’s ready for the next game.” City have three players up for the Women’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year 2017 and three on the Young Player of the Year shortlist.
