HOLLYWOOD legend Warren Beatty last night spoke for the first time about the turmoil when he handed Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope at the Oscars.

His co-host Faye wrongly announced La La Land as best film instead of Moonlight.

Speaking for the first time about the blunder, Bonnie And Clyde star Beatty revealed he was mortified. “It was chaos,” he added. Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers apologised for their “unacceptable” mistake, with Moonlight later correctly announced as the best film.

The gaffe was the biggest blunder in the awards’ 88-year history but has not put a dent in Beatty’s acting ambitions.

He will soon be seen in Rules Don’t Apply, playing reclusive US tycoon Howard Hughes, marking the 80-year-old actor’s return to the big screen after 15 years.

Explaining on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show why he had not made films lately, the star – married to actress Annette Bening since 1992 – said: “We have four kids who are all more interesting to me than any 50 movies.

“But now we are approaching the empty nest period I’m maybe going to make some movies. I have compared it to vomiting. You think about it for a long time, try to avoid it but finally think you will feel better if you go ahead and throw up.”

He also spoke about turning down the role of Superman in the 1970s. He said: “I didn’t think it was a good idea to put a comic strip into a movie. They were insistent so I got my assistant to buy me some long underwear.

“I put it on, looked at myself in a full-length mirror and picked up the phone to say, ‘Just forget it’.”

On the 1972 song You’re So Vain, by Carly Simon, he said he did not know if it was written about him.
