Whodunnit? Broadchurch finale is a double shock

- By Helene Perkins

BROADCHURCH ended last night with a shocking double twist as it was revealed a 16-year-old boy raped Trish Winterman.

Michael Lucas, the son of cab driver Clive Lucas, confessed to the rape of Trish Winterman and was joined in the attack by Leo Humphries, who was questioned after evidence of three other rapes found in footage on his phone.

The final episode was full of twists and turns before the attackers were finally revealed.

Broadchurch writer and creator Chris Chibnall said last night’s finale was as “emotional” for him as the millions who tuned in.

Viewers were gripped by the hit ITV series, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, as Trish Winterman’s rapist was unmasked.

Chris said: “It’s a strange feeling actually, it’s quite emotional.

“It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show and has taken us all by surprise.” But he said there would be no return to the sleepy Dorset coastal town after its third series ended.

“That is it and there will be no more after this one, absolutely,” he said. “There’s lots going on and a lot to wrap up in just one hour, so I hope it’s a satisfying ending.”

Chris, who is taking over from Doctor Who show-runner Steven Moffat, said it was during the writing process he worked out who raped Trish, played by ex-Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh. “I wrote the first draft of episode one and I thought it was somebody. Then I realised it was someone else,” he said.

The main suspects included Trish’s best friend’s husband Jim Atwood (Mark Bazeley), taxi driver Clive Lucas (Sebastian Armesto), her ex Ian Winterman (Charlie Higson), boss Ed Burnett (Sir Lenny Henry) and fishing shop manager Leo Humphries (Chris Mason).

Of the show’s harrowing subject matter, Chris said: “We went to Dorset sexual assault referral centre and Rape Crisis and Survivors’ Trust, and the question I asked them was, ‘Should we be telling this story in Broadchurch, is it an appropriate thing to do?’

“They were unanimous and said: ‘Yes, absolutely, you must, because there’s an incredible amount of support out there for people who survive these crimes.”
