I thought I was too old to be a dad says Simon

- By Giles Sheldrick

MUSIC mogul Simon Cowell has admitted he thought he was too old to become a firsttime father in his mid-50s, but he “gets it now”.

The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent supremo said having son Eric, now three, with partner Lauren Silverman had changed him for the better.

Cowell, 57, said: “It gives you such a different perspective on life. Things I thought were important just aren’t.

“Because I see a lot of things through his eyes now, I find everything to be a happier place. I’m protective about him, so I think about other issues. I never quite understood. I thought I’m too old to be a dad. Then when it happened – I get it now.”

Choosing his favourite songs with Ken Bruce on Radio 2 this week, Cowell said: “When I thought about what songs I absolutely love, I have to admit Bare Necessities. When my son was about one he started watching Jungle Book and I watched him sing along.

“I have watched this movie a lot, so I know the song really well. It always puts me in a good mood, it always makes me smile. It’s probably my favourite Disney cartoon of all time. It reminds me of when I was a kid as well.”

He also revealed that Eric accompanies him to TV recordings and has an eye for spotting the hits and misses on Britain’s Got Talent.

Simon, who has amassed a personal fortune estimated at £350million, said: “He’s a little bit like a mini me, which is a bit of a problem.

“He does come to the shows with me. You know what’s so funny, when he watches Britain’s Got Talent, he’s definitely got a good eye.

“I watch him out of the corner of my eye. When the good ones are on he’s staring at them and then when the boring ones are on he looks down. So he’ll definitely be following in my footsteps.”

Simon also chose the song One More Try by George Michael, saying: “I found him to be really kind, Lrem genuine. ipsum dolor sit amet, cotempor
