In 1983 it won Le Mans and its ‘brute force’ helped to establish the firm’s reputation as the dominant force in modern motor racing. 1955 Jaguar D-Type: £16.8 million Described as one of the world’s ‘most stunningly beautiful cars’, this iconic 1955 Jaguar D-Type was sold on August 19, 2016 and commanded the highest ever price in a public sale for a Le Mans 24 winner, with three victories in the mid-1950s. 1956 Aston Martin DBR1: £17.5million Labelled as the ‘most important Aston Martin ever produced’, on Saturday it overtook the Jaguar D-Type to become the most expensive British car in history. Raced by the legendary Sir Stirling this was the first of five models built between 1956 and 1958.
