A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car containing four children, including two baby boys, smashed into a pub.

The crash happened hours after a mother of four put out a frantic appeal to trace the man who was later detained at the scene.

It is thought the driver, 29, is the A LUCKY mother quit her job hours after learning she had scooped the largest single lottery jackpot in history.

Mavis Wanczyk, a health centre worker from Massachusetts, was the sole winner of the US Powerball lottery, in which she won $758million (£592million).

But lottery officials said Mavis had opted to take a lump sum payment of £375million, so she will take home £262million after taxes.

When Mavis, 53, was asked yesterday if she was going back to the job where she has worked for 32 years, she said: “I called them and told them I will not be coming back.”

She said the first thing she was going to do was “just sit back and relax”.

Mavis, who has a 31-year-old daughter and a 26-year-old son, bought her winning ticket at a petrol station in Chicopee, near Boston.

She chose most of her numbers based on relatives’ birthdays – 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26 – and included her lucky number, 4.

Mavis told reporters that she learnt about her win as she was father of two of the children hurt in the crash.

The incident occurred in Thurgoland, near Barnsley, South Yorks, in the early hours of Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon the group were reported missing from Hythe, Hants – more than 200 miles from the scene of the incident.

Police and ambulance crews raced to the Travellers Inn pub after reports a grey Dacia Logan had smashed into its front wall at 12.25am.

Two girls, aged seven and eight, and two boys, aged nine months and 21 months, were rushed to hospital seriously hurt. The driver was also injured. He was taken to hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
