Blind Date couple meet in brief encounter on Tube after 25 years

- By Gillian Crawley

THEIR first meeting 25 years ago was watched by millions on TV’s Blind Date. Howard Griffiths picked Brigette Bard on Cilla Black’s hit Saturday show. The pair were sent on a romantic trip to Germany, but after vowing to stay connected they lost touch. However, in an amazing coincidence, they were reunited on a Tube train on Thursday night. Howard, 48, now a TV broadcaster living in London, had been out for drinks. He was travelling home on the Central Line when four women got on at Liverpool Street. He said: “The doors opened and a blonde woman grabbed a seat opposite me. She was staring and said, ‘You’re Howard, aren’t you?’ And I said, ‘Oh my God! You’re Brigette with the amazing blue eyes’.”

Brigette, 45, from Epping, Essex, said: “His face was familiar but his laugh did it. I’d recognise it anywhere.”

Howard’s stop was coming up so they had no time to chat. So he took a video, swapped business cards and dashed off.

He tweeted the video of their brief encounter to Transport for London.

Brigette replied: “What a tiny planet. What are the chances. Fab to see you.”

Their episode, recorded in October 1992, drew 17 million viewers. Single Howard, originally from Cardiff, moved into TV after the show and is a shopping channel presenter.

Divorced Brigette, the boss of a medical company, is going to meet up with Howard after he promised her a copy of their episode.

CONTESTANTS who were paired up on Blind Date 25 years ago met by accident on the London Underground. Their “date” all those years ago didn’t lead to anything. But now… who can say? Up in heaven Cilla may be choosing a hat.
