Klopp’s had his Phil of Barca saga

-

Liverpool’s preparations for matches this season have frequently been disrupted by Barcelona’s pursuit of the Brazil international.

The Reds remain defiant about not selling the attacking midfielder and will reject a fourth bid should Barca try again.

Coutinho is eager to make the switch to the Nou Camp but, with less than a week of the transfer window remaining, hopes of a deal are dwindling.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Klopp admitted: “I’m not sure there was one easy day since we started pre-season, maybe the first day.

“It was so long ago. Always something changes. All the discussions about Phil and then Adam Lallana gets injured. It was like, ‘What?’ I don’t think anyone can expect that.”

Barcelona have been public about their pursuit of Coutinho, with players and officials happy to comment on developments.

Liverpool told Barcelona not to call them again after they rejected a third bid of £119million.

But despite their behaviour, Klopp took a dignified stance. “I don’t judge what other clubs are doing,” he added. “To be disappointed about different things, you need to have expectations. I don’t have expectations, I don’t think about other clubs.

“We all have our own problems. If we think we have to do something, we do it. In this moment, I would have preferred we finished our business six weeks ago.

“Let all the rest of the world do what they do. It’s getting more and more different and difficult.”

Coutinho is struggling with a back injury and illness and will miss the Arsenal clash.

The 25-year-old will still join up with the Brazil squad during the international break but Klopp doubts he will be fit enough to play.

“If he goes there and can train, I don’t think he can, but they will decide,” added the German.

“It’s in the hands of the specific FA. They make their own decisions. Are we always happy with things like that? No, not always in the past.

“Sometimes a player comes back after a small injury, goes to their national team and plays two games. It’s the same procedure as always.”

Klopp also said that his Liverpool team could go on to reach new heights now that they had qualified for the Champions League group stage. “Since I came in October 2015 we created an atmosphere that is extremely special. We feel the power of this club,” said Klopp. “We need to show up all the time and be part of the Champions League and, if that is no sign, then I don’t understand what a sign is. For all of us it builds confidence.”
