Dominic marks new age in style

-

DOMINIC CalvertLewin, whose match-winner brought England Under-20s World Cup glory in June, stepped up in style last night.

The Everton striker marked his U21s debut by giving England the lead in Doetinchem as they opened their Euro 2019 qualifying campaign with a hard-earned point.

It was quite a summer for Calvert-Lewin, the U20s and the U21s.

As the U20s celebrated glory with CalvertLewin’s strike in the 1-0 defeat of Venezuela in Suwon, South Korea, the U21s suffered the agony of losing on penalties to Germany in the European semi-finals in Tychy, Poland.

New season, new era and a brilliant start for Calvert-Lewin, above, in this new age of his international career.

Bothroyd’s side the lead after a slick build-up play from his Everton team-mate Ademola Lookman, another of the U20 World Cup heroes.

Calvert-Lewin took his chance wonderfully, latching on to Lookman’s pass before steering a pinpoint shot low into the bottom left corner.

Impressive though the move was, England were left shaking their heads 12 minutes later as they rued a defensive lapse that saw Holland draw level, as Bart Ramselaa was allowed to ghost into the box unmarked to nod home.

England then had to hold on both at the end of the half and during the second but they survived on a night when Calvert-Lewin once more underlined his fine international credentials.
