SHOULD WE ENCOURAGE OLDER DRIVERS?

-

Yes

THANK you for your article about mature motorists continuing to drive (“Why driving is so crucial to older people’s independence”, September 11).

My husband and I both have a car and passed our driving tests 60 years ago. We regularly drive eight miles to our nearest town, not doing 40mph but driving at the lawful speed for the road.

We are regularly tailgated by younger drivers. They are speed mad and as for motorcyclists, speed limits mean nothing to them. It comes as no surprise we read about carnage on our roads.

No

I KNOW people over 70 have to renew their driving licence every three years but there should be more to ensure that they are safe on the roads.

People say elderly drivers are safe but they actually cause problems by driving too slow and poor eyesight and hearing means they are not aware of the dangers until it is too late.

Somebody who passed their test 50 years ago is from a different era and the roads are so different now.

Everyone should have to retake their test at 70 or simply stop driving.
