THE widow of legendary entertainer Bruce Forsyth was last night “thrilled” a new major television award is to be named in his memory.

The National Television Awards will have a new category named The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award to recognise the 75-year career of the legendary performer.

Sir Bruce’s widow, Wilnelia, said: “My darling Bruce would have been both humbled and delighted to have an award named in his honour.

“Entertainment was his life and the NTAs always had a special place in his heart because they’re the people’s awards, voted by viewers.”

She added: “The children and I are thrilled his flame will still burn brightly with this new award celebrating the stars of today and tomorrow.”

Sir Bruce, who died in August aged 89 after stepping down as host of Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, had a close history with the NTAs.

The show celebrated his iconic status with the illustrious Special Recognition Award in 2011.

On accepting the accolade from Stephen Fry, he said: “It’s overwhelming – the best thing I’ve ever won.”

Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly are expected to be contenders for the new award with their show Saturday Night Takeaway.

Other prime time favourites include Sir Bruce Forsyth and Wilnelia in 2014 The Graham Norton Show and Tonight At The London Palladium, which will forever be associated with the beloved entertainer.

Another new category includes the Crime Drama Award honouring hit home-grown shows which have gripped the nation’s viewers.

Voting for the awards opens today with the results revealed in front of an audience of stars and fans at the televised ceremony hosted by Dermot O’Leary at O2 London on January 23.
