PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Wildlife: Alaska: A Year In The Wild, 9pm, Channel 5

We move into autumn in the final instalment. For many young creatures, this is the point where their mothers leave them to fend for themselves. Humpback whales return to feeding grounds on the south east coast, having completed one of the longest migrations of any species. Sea otters (left) spend hours grooming their coat, drying their fur and removing salt and excess oil – fluffing it up traps air, giving four times as much insulation as the same thickness of fat.

Music: Later Live – With Jools Holland, 10pm, BBC2

Robert Plant (above) is still going strong at 69 and tonight he is joined by his band the Sensational Space Shifters to play tracks from his new album Carry Fire. American multi-instrumentalist St Vincent, aka Annie Clark, showcases her new LP Masseduction. There are also performances from singer-songwriters Nick Mulvey, Kelela and John Moreland to enjoy. NB: 11.15PM IN ULSTER

Reality: Celebrity Hunted, 9.15pm, C4

The third series of this real-life thriller begins with a Stand Up To Cancer special. The famous faces taking part tonight are Anneka Rice, Jamie Laing, Spencer Matthews, Jay McGuiness, Siva Kaneswaran and Steph and Dom Parker (all left) – if you know all of them, you deserve a huge amount of credit. Of all of the celebs, we think Rice must have a huge advantage given her time on Challenge Anneka. She is quick off the mark, using friends in high places and her considerable charm with members of the public to her advantage. Gogglebox stars Steph and Dom find themselves in danger as their attempts to lie low are hampered by having too much of a good time, which sounds about right for those two.

Drama: Our Girl – Nepal Tour, 9pm, BBC1

Michelle Keegan is back as Georgie Lane. Along with her 2 Section, she is sent to Nepal following a devastating earthquake. She quickly discovers that disaster brings out the worst, as well as the best in people. In addition to her duties as a medic, Georgie is tasked with mentoring a young recruit and meets Milan (Rudi Dharmalingam, above with Michelle Keegan as Lane), an attractive Nepalese engineer.

Animals: The Yorkshire Vet, 8pm, Channel 5

Series five of this enjoyable show is maintaining the high standards of the previous offerings and tonight Peter (right) and Julian rush to help a ewe struggling to deliver her lamb. While they are there, they realise there is another expectant mother who also needs urgent help. Back at Skeldale, Peter has a visit from Benji the border terrier who, despite being lively as ever, has been vomiting, while a calf has a life-threatening hernia.
