Wasps undone by Ulster

- Andrew Elliott

WASPS continued their poor start to the season as Ulster triumphed at the Kingspan Stadium in the Champions Cup opener.

Wasps got off to the perfect start when Lions star Elliot Daly drilled home a penalty from just inside the Ulster half after only four minutes.

A John Cooney penalty levelled matters but Wasps ensured they nudged ahead 6-3, with fly-half Jimmy Gopperth landing a penalty with

the final kick of the first half.

Wasps went further ahead six minutes after the restart, with Gopperth slotting his second penalty.

Ulster went close to a try in the 52nd minute when fly-half Christian Lealiifano went over, but the TMO adjudged him to have knocked on over the line.

But Ulster were not to be denied as wing Jacob Stockdale crossed just three minutes later, but the extras were missed by Cooney.

The Ulstermen were on a roll and, two minutes later, they added another try through centre Stuart McCloskey, following a break by Charles Piutau and inside pass by Stockdale.

Cooney, however, again missed the conversion to leave Wasps with a fourpoint deficit.

But Lealiffano kicked two penalties, the latter with Wasps wing Josh Bassett in the sin-bin for a high tackle, ensured Ulster came away with the win.

Denny Solomona and Bryn Evans scored tries as Sale Sharks emerged with a creditable 20-20 draw against Toulouse at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Cardiff Blues notched four tries in their 29-19 win over Lyon.
