Swans players stand by Clement

- By Alex Bywater

PAUL CLEMENT has received the backing of his under-fire Swansea players after their woeful display saw them beaten by Brighton at the Liberty Stadium. Glenn Murray scored the only goal of the game and while the Seagulls looked impressive, the real story was the ineptitude of the home side. Swansea are now in the bottom three and were booed off at half-time and the final whistle.

“We are all really behind Paul,” said Swans captain Federico Fernandez. “We need to work, work and work.

“It’s the only way we know to improve. We are a team, a club who stay together and we push each other to be the best. At the moment it’s not really working, but we will try until the end to stay together and turn it around.”

Fernandez was to blame for Brighton’s 29th-minute goal.

The Argentine was static inside his own sixyard box and failed to deal with a cross by Anthony Knockaert before Murray bundled the ball home. The goal enraged the home fans, who were already angry about the team’s performance and had protested against chairman Huw Jenkins before kick-off .

Brighton’s first season in the Premier League could not be going much better. They are in the top half of the table and unbeaten in four games.

“I’m not surprised at where we are, not at all,” said Knockaert.

“We’re there because we have the quality to be there.”
