University top earner quits over pay claims

-

THE country’s highest-paid university vice-chancellor announced her retirement yesterday amid uproar over her £450,000 earnings.

Dame Professor Glynis Breakwell, 65, who lives rent-free in a £1.6million house yet claimed nearly £20,000 in expenses including £2 for biscuits last year, said she would stand down next summer. She had become the focus of anger at the University of Bath after a report found the process behind her pay award damaged its reputation. Staff said her pay had risen much faster than theirs while students complained her “businesslike” approach had led to extortionate fees and rents.

A meeting called to demand her resignation had to be delayed because so many people wanted to attend and a mass protest had been planned for today.

Dame Glynis said she had served the university “to the best of my ability” in her 17 years.
