Stop underhand attempts to create united Ireland
IT is obvious Irish government demands over the border issue are purely a political manoeuvre to isolate Northern Ireland economically, politically and socially from the rest of the UK in order to create a de facto united Ireland (“Fury as Brussels tells Britain to accept new rules as price of deal”, November 27).
The vast majority of Northern Ireland’s exports are to the rest of the UK. To keep Northern Ireland in the single market and customs union will seriously disrupt this trade. It would also mean that part of the UK will be controlled by EU decisions and still be subject to European Court rulings.
The UK must stand firm and make clear that the Good Friday Agreement takes precedence.
The Government should be bold and make a unilateral decision that the UK will not impose any tariffs or restrictions on trade between companies based in the Republic and Northern Ireland and citizens from both sides can travel freely.
If the EU and Irish Republic then wish to impose restrictions then let them police the border, impose tariffs and then explain that to the population. Paul Lewis, Edinburgh
